The 2017 Toyota RAV4 SE delivers a distinctive balance of sport-inspired styling, everyday utility, and refined ride quality, making it a standout in the competitive compact SUV segment. As the sportier trim level in the RAV4 lineup, the SE distinguishes itself with unique design elements, firmer suspension tuning, and a more athletic character, without compromising the comfort and practicality that RAV4 buyers expect. It manages to strike a satisfying balance between dynamic looks and functional performance, offering a slightly more engaging drive than its more comfort-focused siblings.
Under the hood, the SE shares the same 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine found across most RAV4 trims, producing 176 horsepower and 172 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. While not built for performance, the SE’s sport-tuned suspension and revised shock absorbers give it a firmer, more controlled ride, especially noticeable during cornering and highway cruising. Front-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is available for those needing additional traction in varying weather conditions. The handling is competent and composed, and the SE’s slightly sharper steering feel gives it an edge over more comfort-tuned competitors.
Inside, the RAV4 SE features a cabin that leans toward a premium experience, particularly with its standard SofTex-trimmed seats and contrasting orange stitching. The front seats are supportive and heated, offering a commanding view of the road, while the rear seats provide ample room for adults. The SE trim also adds a power-adjustable driver’s seat, paddle shifters, and a power moonroof, enhancing both comfort and driving engagement. Cargo space remains a strong suit, with over 38 cubic feet behind the rear seats and more than 73 cubic feet with the seats folded down—among the best in its class.
Toyota includes a long list of standard safety features in the 2017 RAV4 SE thanks to the Toyota Safety Sense P suite, which incorporates advanced driver aids such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning with steering assist, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. Infotainment is handled through a 7-inch touchscreen interface that includes navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and smartphone integration options. While Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were not yet available, the system is intuitive and responsive, and the SE trim’s enhancements, such as the premium audio system, add value.

RECALL NOTICE
What is a recall:
A safety recall involving a motor vehicle or an item of motor vehicle equipment can be independently conducted by a manufacturer or ordered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In either case, the manufacturer must file a public report describing the safety-related defect or noncompliance with a Federal motor vehicle safety standard, the involved vehicle/equipment population, the major events that resulted in the recall determination, a description of the remedy, and a schedule for the recall. NHTSA monitors each safety recall to ensure the manufacturers provide owners safe, free, and effective remedies according to the Safety Act and Federal regulations. Manufacturers are obligated to attempt to notify owners of recalled products. For vehicles, that means manufacturers merge their own records of vehicle purchasers with current state vehicle registration information. For equipment, where state registration records do not exist, manufacturers are obligated to notify their distribution chain and known purchasers of the recalled equipment. However, even if you do not receive a notification, if your vehicle, child restraint, or other item of equipment is involved in a safety recall, the manufacturer is obligated to provide a free remedy.
