The 2017 Legacy 2.5i Limited delivers a strong package for someone seeking a midsize sedan with comfort, safety, and all-weather capability. Having all-wheel drive as standard gives it an advantage in wet or snowy conditions—traction is predictable, and the Legacy remains composed where many front-wheel drive models struggle. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder “boxer” engine produces about 175 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque; it isn’t fast, especially compared to optional V6s or sporty rivals, but it provides enough power for daily use. The continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) works smoothly, though under hard throttle you’ll notice typical CVT drone.
Ride comfort is well-tuned on the Limited: suspension tuning and sound insulation do a good job dampening road imperfections. The leather-trimmed interior, higher quality materials, and amenities like heated front and rear seats help make long drives more pleasant. Driver’s seat memory, upgraded audio, and other luxury touches make the Limited feel premium without being over the top. Visibility is strong, thanks to large glass areas, and the cabin layout is ergonomic: controls are intuitive, and there’s a generous amount of space both front and rear.
Where it falls short is in performance refinement and some lingering cabin noise under certain conditions. The engine lacks punch, especially when merging or climbing steep inclines with passengers and cargo. The CVT, while efficient, isn’t as responsive as a well-geared automatic. Also, while Subaru has improved styling and features, some competitors still offer more high-end cabin materials or more dynamic handling. But if your priority is comfort, safety, and practicality—especially in challenging weather—this trim is very strong value.
Fuel economy is competitive for its class: somewhere around 25 mpg city / 34 mpg highway, which makes it efficient for an AWD mid-size sedan. In terms of safety, the Legacy scores well; many active safety aids are available, either standard or as options, especially in the Limited trim.
